Electricity Sector in Jordan

Jordan was one of the first countries in the region to initiate fundamental reforms in the electricity sector and has made significant progress in carrying out the reform. Until the year 1996, the national power utility was the Jordan Electricity Authority (JEA), created in 1967. It was the integrated monopoly in charge of generation, transmission and distribution. As a part of its broad reform policy, the Government of Jordan has taken a number of decisions in the energy sector aimed at encouraging competition and private sector participation, particularly in the generation and distribution of electricity. In 1999, the power sector was completely unbundled. Currently, the total system installed capacity is about 3186 MW. The electricity system in Jordan is summarized in the below chart:
